Use a large single ice cube — this controls dilution during service. Build directly in the glass.
Or rye whisky
1:1 sugar to water
Place a large ice cube in a rocks glass. Add bourbon, Angostura bitters and sugar syrup directly to the glass.
Stir gently with a bar spoon for about 20 seconds to combine and slightly dilute.
Express an orange peel over the surface, rim the glass and place in the drink as garnish. Optional: Maraschino cherry.
